My son Tres was swimming at Geyser Falls, and although he was pretty far from me, he was still in my sight. To my horror I noticed that he jumped in the pool right under the lifeguard in five feet of water. I then noticed that he was bobbing up and down, and the lifeguard never saw him. I took off running to save him, but before I got to him, he had turned around and grabbed the wall. He was taught this technique at Maley's. The technique is called "Humpty Dumpty" and teaches the children to turn around and grab for the wall and climb out if they ever fall in the water and are in trouble. Maley's isn't just about teaching children how to swim but also about life saving techniques that could save our children's lives.

"Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in children under the age of five. Both of our children learned to swim at Maley Swim School. Our daughter was four years old when we moved here, and learned to swim her first lesson at Maley's. Our youngest started at 18 months. (If we had lived here earlier, we would have loved to have started him at 6 months.) We are both physicians, and felt strongly that since we live on a lake and are frequently at the pool, we wanted our youngest child to learn water safety early. The water babies' class at Linda Maley's provided a safe and fun way for him to learn to get to the side of the pool if he fell in and to be comfortable in the water. By age two, he was swimming. The Maley instructors use music and games to help introduce what are actually life saving skills. The parent involvement eliminates the fear of separation at standard lessons. Parents also learn that water skills are NOT A SUBTITUTE FOR CONSTANT SUPERVISION. The children learn that they have to wait their turn to get in the water and can't jump right in. Our daughter has been on swim team for four summers and our son started at age five. Maley Swim School helped the children learn the strokes and gain the confidence that they now use on the swim team. Even though the official recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics is to start formal swim lessons at age four, the water babies and water tots programs at MSS gave our family a great head start to swimming and hopefully a lifetime of water safety."

Why Floaties are a Bad Idea

"A week before our lessons began at Maley's our youngest son went swimming for the first time without his floaty swimsuit. We told him not to cross the 'magic line' in the pool. But of course he decided to jump in and 'sank like a rock' and took ten years off my life. After starting Maley's the following week he picked up the strokes very quickly and we are pleased he was able to swim after two weeks. After year round lessons his big brother will be hard pressed to stay ahead of his little brother. I owe Maley Swim School for showing my 'babies' how to be safe and have fun in the pool."
